open cast coal mining

A project for the extraction of coal by opencast
methods from a site on the approved line of the
      Staveley-Brimington by-pass. Pending the
construction of the road, the land has been
returned to more beneficial agricultural use as
previously it was low-lying and waterlogged.

Planning permission had been refused for the
scheme but on appeal, although the project was
not directly linked to the road construction,
the Inspector accepted that it was in the national
interest to work mineral reserves in advance of
      development and not sterilise them.
